The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF
yesterday announced March 11, 2016 for
the commencement of the 2015/2016
Basketball season.
Vice president of the NBBF and chairman
Technical Committee, Muktar Kaleh in a
meeting with club owners stated that the
new league season will begin on March
11.
Kaleh stated further that clubs in the
DStv Premier Basketball League have up
till February 28 for the registration and
transfer of players while licenses would
be issued to clubs in the first week of
March in line with the commencement of
the league.
“After a careful look at the programme
of activities, we have resolved that the
league will tentatively commence on
March 11. Our deadline for registration
will be February 28 and licenses will be
issued a week later after cross checking
that the registration is properly done and
is according to the rules and regulations.
Though, the technical committee
chairman was silent on the format of the
league, League Committee chairman,
Agboola Pinheiro hinted that further
details will reach the clubs before the
commencement date.
Speaking on the eligibility of foreign
players, Pinheiro confirmed that clubs are
free to register three foreign players but
only two can be on the court at any
given time. His position was collaborated
by Kaleh who instructed that a copy of
the rules guiding the league be issued to
all clubs.
On the Zenith Bank sponsored Women’s
Basketball League, Kaleh revealed that
the season will start early with the first
phase of the league holding on February
28, 2016.
He explained that the early
commencement of the league is to
enable national team players in the
domestic league time to warm up before
they report to camp for the Olympic
Qualifying Tournament camp.
