A U.S. man and his sister were sentenced
to life in prison on Thursday for cyberstalking that led
to the shooting death of the man's former wife and her
friend in a Delaware courthouse lobby ahead of a
contentious child custody hearing.
David Matusiewicz, his sister Amy Gonzalez and his
mother Lenore were convicted in U.S. District Court in
Delaware last July of cyberstalking resulting in death,
the first successful application of federal law on the
offense, prosecutors said. They were also found guilty
of conspiracy.
Matusiewicz and Gonzalez were sentenced to life by
U.S. District Judge Gerald McHugh on Thursday, the
U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Delaware said.
Matusiewicz's mother was sentenced to life at her
bedside last week at Jefferson Medical Center in
Philadelphia, federal prosecutors said.
"This ground-breaking prosecution and investigation
shows people who actively take part in planning
crimes, even though they don't pull the trigger, will be
held accountable," said Kevin Perkins, special agent in
charge of the FBI in Delaware.
On Feb. 11, 2013, David Matusiewicz and his father
Thomas went to confront David's ex-wife Christine
Belford at New Castle County Courthouse when she
arrived for a child support hearing in their custody
case.
Thomas Matusiewicz then shot dead Belford and her
friend Laura Mulford in the courthouse lobby and took
his own life after exchanging gunfire with police.
The shooting was the culmination of a four-year
campaign of letters, websites and Internet postings to
"stalk, harass, and intimidate" Belford, the mother of
David Matusiewicz's three children, according to U.S.
prosecutors.
They said David Matusiewicz orchestrated the plan and
recruited his parents and sister while serving a 48-
month jail term for abducting his children and hiding
out with them for 19 months in Nicaragua and other
countries.

Not less than 300 students - players, male and
female from 16 Nigerian Universities would later this
month storm the Redemption camp of Redeemed
Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos to
participate in a sports fiesta which is part of the
74th birthday anniversary of Pastor Enoch Adeboye.
The games (Volley Ball and Futsal competitions), is
to run from Monday February 29 to March 5th.
Speaking at a press

Directorate, RCCG,
Paul Bankole,
explained that the
games, which would
be guided by 70
officials, would be
sponsored by the
Governors of Ondo
and Lagos States,
Olusegun Mimiko
and Akinwumi
Ambode, who are the spiritual sons of the RCCG
General Overseer.
Bankole, while defending the choice of Volleyball
and Futsal games for the celebration said it is to
underscore the the importance of the game of
volleyball to the General Overseer, who played and
coached the sport while he was at the University.
He said aside the economic and health importance
of these games, Futsal and foot volley can be easily
played by everyone, everywhere - outdoor and on the
grass.
“Our G. O played volleyball and also became
volleyball coach when he was at the University of
Lagos for his Masters. At 74 he is still active. He
still talks and demonstrates some skills even in
boxing, another sport he also featured in as a
student.”
He said he had no doubt that the games is capable
of producing future Olympians.
‘We are aware that there are thousands of potential
Olympic stars and we believe with the backing of
NOC we will produce these athletes”, he stated.
Egypt on Thursday laid to rest its
veteran diplomat Boutros Boutros-Ghali, holding a
funeral procession with top honors in the capital, Cairo,
followed by a service at the nation's largest Coptic
cathedral for the man who was the first U.N. chief
from Africa.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi led the
procession, walking at the front of the cortege as a
horse-drawn hearse carried Boutros-Ghali's flag-draped
coffin. The head of Egypt's Coptic Church attended the
service in Cairo, along with senior dignitaries.
Eulogizing Boutros-Ghali, the Coptic patriarch, Pope
Tawadros II, said Egypt was bidding "farewell to this
fine example in Egyptian life and in Egyptian history."
UNESCO chief Irina Bokova, representing the United
Nations, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby,
and his predecessor Amr Moussa and other Egyptian
ministers and officials attended the service at the
Coptic Cathedral in the Abbassia district in Cairo.
At U.N. headquarters in New York and U.N. offices
around the world, flags flew at half-staff in honor of
the sixth U.N. secretary-general.
The 193-member General Assembly paid tribute to
Boutros-Ghali, led by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-
moon who said that as the first post-Cold War
secretary-general he "helped the United Nations find its
footing in a new global landscape" at a tumultuous
time.
Rihanna delayed the start of a world
tour days after the R&B star missed the Grammys,
citing an illness that affected her voice.
The first scheduled show on Rihanna's "Anti" tour is
now March 12 in Jacksonville, Florida, according to her
website and notices from venues.
Rihanna had previously been due to open the tour on
February 26 in San Diego, but has postponed eight
shows.
The singer abruptly canceled a performance on Monday
at the Grammys, the music industry's top awards.
Her representative said at the time that the Barbados-
born singer had fallen ill and was under doctor's orders
to rest her vocal cords to avoid permanent damage.
A representative did not immediately respond to a
request for comment Thursday.
Rihanna is scheduled to end the tour on August 12 in
Zurich.
The Barbados-born singer toured extensively in 2013
and then briefly the following year with Eminem, but
had since kept a lower profile.
She returned to the scene last month with "Anti," her
first full-length album since 2012.
A military court in Ivory Coast on
Thursday sentenced three soldiers loyal to ex-president
Laurent Gbagbo to life in prison over the 2002 murder
of a former junta leader.
General Robert Guei was shot dead on September 19,
2002, during a failed coup against Gbagbo's regime.
His wife, several members of his family and his
personal guards were killed that same day.
Guei had led a military junta that ruled the west African
nation from December 1999 to October 2000, when
Gbagbo defeated him at the polls.
Following a trial that last nearly a month, the court-
martial found ex-security chief Anselme Seka Yapo
guilty of murder, while Gbagbo's former Republican
Guard commander Brunot Dogbo Ble as well as
sergeant Daleba Sery were ruled to have acted as
accomplices.
Of the 19 defendants on trial over the murder, six were
sentenced to 10 years in prison. The others were
acquitted.
During the trial, prosecutors accused Seka Yapo of
firing the fatal shot.
Lawyers for the defence have said they intend to
appeal the verdict, citing a lack of evidence of their
clients' guilt.
"I am disappointed but not discouraged," said lawyer
Modeste Abie. "We believe that our clients do not
deserve life terms."
Seka Yapo was last year already sentenced to 20 years
in prison for murder committed during the country's
post-election crisis in 2010-2011.
Dogbo Ble was sentenced in 2012 to 15 years in jail for
complicity in the murder of a retired officer, and last
year to another 20 years for his role in the 2010-2011
violence.
Some 3,000 people were killed after the disputed
presidential vote in late 2010, when Gbagbo refused to
relinquish power after being narrowly defeated in his
bid for re-election.
He is currently on trial at the International Criminal
Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity over
the violence.
An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court, yesterday,
remanded one Abdulsalam Olayinka, 20, in prison for
allegedly raping a 14-year-old orphan on Valentine’s
Day.
Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias ordered that the
accused be remanded in Kirikiri Prison and adjourned
the case till February 24 for ruling on the bail
application.
The accused, a trader, who lives at 2, Amodu St.,
Agege, Lagos, is standing trial for rape.
The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, told
the court that the offence was committed on
February 14 at 5, Olanrawaju St., Agege.
Aigbokhan told the court that the accused went to
his friend’s house, but that the friend was not
around; that he met the girl in the house and raped
her.
Aigbokhan said: “The victim, who is an orphan,
screamed but no one in the house came to her
rescue, except her aged grandmother.”
The offence, according to the prosecutor,
contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of
Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
Former Nigeria internationals, Mutiu Adepoju and
Edema Fuludu, have hailed the current form of Chelsea
midfielder, Mikel Obi, saying he would be key to
Nigeria’s pursuit of victory against Egypt in their
Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Mikel, who is in his 10th season at Chelsea, has
rediscovered his form since he returned to the starting
line-up of the English League champions under interim
coach Guus Hiddink. The 28-year-old scored his sixth
Chelsea goal in his 358th appearance on Tuesday in a
2-1 loss to Paris St. Germain in the UEFA Champions
League.
Nigeria will play Egypt on March 25 in Kaduna before
playing the return leg in Cairo and the former Super
Eagles players, who spoke with our correspondent in
separate interviews, believe that Mikel has achieved a
new level of confidence which would rub on his
performance for the Eagles.
Adepoju said, “Mikel has achieved a new level of
confidence in his game and it was what resulted in his
ability to take the responsibility for the team against
PSG. He saw himself as responsible for the
opponent’s first goal and fought well to get one back
for his team.
The British Council Lagos Theatre Festival will be
coming to Lagos between February 23rd and 28th
2016, to hold the biggest Arts gathering in the city and
the largest outdoor theatre festival in Nigeria.

Lagos Theatre Festival 2016 will be an extravaganza of
music,dance,spoken word, musical and performance
theatre.
For the first time since its inception in 1999, the
national finals of the Nestle Milo Secondary School
Basketball Championship, has been moved out of
Lagos State.
It will be held in Asaba, the Delta State capital this
year.
The organisers of the championship, who made this
announcement at a press conference heralding the
18th edition of the tournament on Thursday in Lagos,
said the final play-offs will hold between June 5 and
12 at the Asaba Stadium.
The competition will feature four conferences: the
Western Conference, which will be held in Lagos from
April 21 to 27, with school teams from Delta, Edo, Ekiti,
Ondo, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos states.
The Central Conference, which will be hosted by Ilorin
from April 27 to May 4, will have teams from Benue,
FCT, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger,
Sokoto and Zamfara states.
The Confluence Conference billed for Lokoja, Kogi
State from May 5 to May 12, will have teams from
Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano,
Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Kogi states.
Then the Equatorial Conference will take place from
May 13 to 19 in Enugu with teams from Abia, Anambra,
Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Ebonyi Rivers, Imo
and Enugu states participating.
All teams in the national finals will receive N200,000
each, while the winners, first and second runners-up
will get extra N150,000, N120,000 and N100,000
respectively.
The Managing Director, Nestle Nigeria, Dharnesh
Gordhon, said this edition of the championship “will
stretch to over 9,000 schools across the 36 states and
the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, helping to find
out potential talents.”
The firm’s Category Manager, Beverages, Olufemi
Akintola, said the championship has played a key role
in producing many national and international basketball
stars.
“A good number of the players in the Nigerian Premier
Basketball League participated in the Milo Secondary
Schools basketball championship. Some of our
champions are currently playing in international
leagues in the USA, Spain, Germany, Portugal and even
China,” Akintola said.
According to the General-Secretary of the National
School Sports Federation, Olabisi Joseph, who
represented the federation’s president, there will be
data capturing and biometrics of players at the
conferences to produce a database that will be “an
undefeatable tool in the war against the cankerworm
of the use of mercenaries.”
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says
Lagosians will start using the blue line of the light rail
project by December 2016.
Ambode spoke during the 5th Lagos Corporate
Assembly, a forum for public-private sector
engagement, at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
He said, “The contractors are actually working on the
waters for now and by December this year, the project
will start running. So, work is seriously ongoing.”
Ambode added that the government was about
concluding on the channelisation of the waterways in
Lagos to improve water transport, encourage
investment, and reduce the pressure on road networks
in the state.
He said the state would continue to create an enabling
environment for businesses to thrive with the overall
aim of improving on the socio-economic wellbeing of
the citizens.

Managers threatening to play a weakened
team in the FA Cup has become a familiar sound in
recent seasons and Manuel Pellegrini joined the
chorus ahead of Manchester City's fifth-round tie
away to Chelsea on Sunday.
At both ends of the Premier League, the financial
incentive to either qualify for the Champions League
or avoid relegation has led to many managers
drawing on their extended squads for FA Cup ties.
In fairness to Pellegrini, who was told at the start of
this month that he would be replaced as City
manager by Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola at
the end of the season, his FA Cup dilemma this
weekend is not of his own making.
The BBC, who are broadcasting City's Cup tie, have
had their request to get the game moved from
Saturday to Sunday accepted by the FA.
That means Pellegrini's men will be in action just a
day before they travel to Ukraine ahead of the first
leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against
Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday, with City bidding to
reach the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club
competition for the first time.
That fixture in turn takes place just four days before

to confirm the rumour that she was pregnant from

The ‘German Juice’ singer flatly denied the rumour.

An Ikeja High Court on Wednesday sentenced two
men — Seun Omoilodan and Gbenga Kayode — to
death by hanging for armed robbery.
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye handed down the
judgment after finding the duo guilty of conspiracy
and armed robbery.
She said: “The defendants are hereby convicted
and sentenced to death by hanging for armed
robbery.
“On the third count of attempted robbery, the
defendants are sentenced to life imprisonment.”
Earlier, in his allocutus, counsel to Omoilodan and
Kayode, Mr Damola Victor, had appealed to the
court to temper justice with mercy.
“My Lord, kindly temper justice with mercy. The
defendants are first time offenders and have shown
remorse for their crimes.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the
convicts committed the offences on Nov. 2 and 9,
2011 at Ayangburen Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The prosecution led by the Chief State Counsel, Mr
Akin George, had told the court that the two men
while armed with dangerous weapons robbed one
Alhaji Jinadu of unspecified number of mobile
phones and cash on Nov. 2, 2011.
George said that on Nov. 9, 2011 the convicts also
robbed one Mr Rilwan Gbadamosi and his wife of
cash and property.
The offences contravened Sections 295 (2), (b) of
the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. (NAN)
Nigerian oil workers, under the
aegis of Petroleum and Natural
Gas Senior Staff Association of
Nigeria, PENGASSAN, on
Wednesday applauded the
federal government for the
renewed effort to reorganize the
productive and extractive
industries.
Acting General Secretary of
PENGASSAN, Lumumba
Okugbawa, on Wednesday
commended the government’s
recent decision to review and
redraft the Petroleum Industry
Bill (PIB) for re-submission to
the National Assembly for
passage.
The PIB, which would provide
the legal and institutional
framework for the country’s oil
and gas sector, has been
pending before the National
Assembly for approval since
2012.
Mr. Okugbawa said the PIB,
when eventually passed into law
by the National Assembly, would
redefine the regulatory and
control apparatus of the oil and
gas industry and ensure that the
petroleum industry operated in
line with acceptable global
standards.
Lamenting the long delay in
passing the draft documents
into law, Mr. Okugbawa said the
absence of established laws
guiding aspects of the industry
operations has cost the country
huge losses, in terms of fresh
investments.
“The senior staff association
calls on the National Assembly
to expedite action on the
passage of the Petroleum
Industry Bill, PIB, as well as
reconsider global best practices
in maintaining two regulatory
agencies to superintend over the
upstream and downstream
sectors,” the PENGASSAN scribe
said.
On the government’s decision to
sack the Chief Executives for the
regulatory agencies in the petroleum
industry on Tuesday, Mr. Okugbawa called
for a “diligent search for suitable
replacements” to sustain the momentum of
progress in the industry reform process.
The Federal Government had on Tuesday
sacked the Chief Executives of the Petroleum
Technology Development Fund (PTDF);
Nigerian Content Development and
Monitoring Board (NCDMB); Petroleum
Equalization Fund (PEF), and Petroleum
Product Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources,A New York judge was busted for drunk driving on her
way to court in Rochester.
According to Monroe County District Attorney Sandra
Doorley, Astacio, 34, was ticketed by New York State
Police traveling on Interstate 490 near the Mt. Read
Boulevard exit about 8am on Saturday, the Democrat
and Chronicle reported.
The report also said her vehicle appeared to be
damaged in what may have been a one-car crash
The Rochester judge refused to take a Breathalyzer
test and was charged with misdemeanor driving while
intoxicated.
According to the report, Astacio had previously worked
in drunk driving bureau of the the Monroe County DA’s
office before being elected as judge two years ago.
The judge had also worked as a defense lawyer before
her election.
She was to preside over criminal court arraignments in
Rochester, but instead she found herself with an
appearance ticket. She will appear in court next
month.
Another judge was called in her place following her
arrest.
Former Newcastle United striker Shola
Ameobi is disappointed to see the club struggling to
survive relegation in the English Premier League.
Newcastle are currently in 18th place on the log, with
just 24 points from 26 games.
They suffered a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of
Chelsea on Saturday after several defeats, a situation
that has now left the Nigeria international
disappointed.
"It's very disappointing as a fan. That's what I am,
first and foremost. I want to see my hometown do
well and it's obviously worrying times at the
moment,” he said on Eatsleep Football.
"But you've got to continue to have faith and belief
that the guys can pull it out of the bag. They've
certainly got the quality to be able to do that and I
just hope that's the case."
Ameobi, 34, is a product of the Newcastle youth set-
up and went on to play over 300 times for the senior

Inspector-General of Police Solomon Arase
has ordered the Commissioners of Police in Delta,
Rivers States to fish out ex-Niger Delta militant
,Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo) from his
hideout.
Tompolo has been declared wanted by the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after a
court issued the warrant for his arrest.
Arase, who spoke in Abuja during a session with
journalists on Wednesday.said he has directed his
men to arrest Tompolo anywhere he was sighted.
He stated that since the EFCC has declared him
wanted through a court order, the police was duty
bound to apprehend him to face the charges against
him.
Tompolo, who is facing 40-count charge , is being
tried alongside the ex-Director General of Nigeria
Maritime Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick
Akpobolokemi, in connection with the alleged
diversion of a sum of N45.9 billion in the execution of
contracts .
Five out of the 26 heads of government
agencies sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari
on Monday have refused to vacate their offices 48
hours after they were removed, reports Daily Trust.
The five have defied government’s directive asking
them to handover to the most senior officers in their
establishments pending the appointment of
substantive chief executives.
Their refusal to handover has led to serious crisis in
these organizations such that riot police had to be
called in to restore normalcy.
At the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory
Agency (PPPRA), Ahmed Farouk has not handed
over.
He has hinged his decision on the fact that there are
still things to be sorted out.
At the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the former DG,
Juliet Chukka-Onaeko, was yet to hand over as at
close of work on Wednesday.
Her refusal to handover has already created tension
in the agency with workers voicing concerns over the
uncertainty prevailing over the transition.
