The British Monarchy has been involved in many
scandals throughout history.
We all might remember Prince Harry's wild trip to Las
Vegas in 2012 where he was photographed naked, or
the topless photos taken the same year of Kate
Middleton on vacation, but there are also many other
royal scandals that you might not know about.
So in celebration of the second season of E!'s hit show
The Royals, we wanted to go back and look at all of the
royal scandals from over the years.
Take a trip down memory lane and see the 8 most
shocking royal scandals below!
1. Prince Harry's Las Vegas Trip:
Back in August 2012, Prince Harry took a trip to Las
Vegas. While there, Harry was spotted hanging by the
pool, chatting with Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and
spending time with friends. Over the course of his stay,
Prince Harry reportedly took part in a game of strip
billiards, which resulted in him getting naked.
Unfortunately for Harry, someone he was partying with
took pictures, which ended up online and all over the
world.
2. Kate Middleton's Topless Pics:
Just weeks after Harry's Las Vegas pictures were
posted everywhere, topless photos surfaced of Kate
Middleton. The pics were taken by paparazzi while Kate
and Prince William were on vacation in France. The
couple was staying at a chateau owned by Lord Linley,
Queen Elizabeth II's nephew. At the time, St. James
Palace told E! News, "Their Royal Highnesses have
been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication
and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a
grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner. The incident
is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and
paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales,
and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for
being so. Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation
of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that
anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish
them."
3. Harry's Costume Controversy:
Back in 2004, a then 20-year-old Harry was
photographed wearing a swastika armband to a friend's
costume party. After the photos surfaced, Clarence
House released a statement saying, "Prince Harry has
apologized for any offense or embarrassment he has
caused. He realizes it was a poor choice of costume."
4. Camillagate:
Back in 1992, a pretty sexual conversation between
Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles was
published and the scandal was dubbed "Camillagate."
Prince Charles was still married to Princess Diana at
the time, so the release of the conversation definitely
raised many eyebrows, especially because Charles and
Camilla dated before his marriage to Diana and
speculation always surrounded their relationship. The
two eventually married in 2005.
5. Squidgygate:
The same year as "Camillagate" happened, a phone
conversation between Princess Diana and her friend
James Gilbey was published. The conversation became
a huge scandal because of the sepeculation surrounding
Princess Diana's relationship with James and in the
conversation he called her "Squidgy" as well as
"Squidge."
6. Prince Charles and Diana's Sister:
Before Charles and Diana married, he actually dated her
sister! That's right, Charles and Lady Sarah Spencer
were an item before Charles and Diana. Charles actually
met Diana in 1977 while visiting her family with Sarah.
The pair didn't become romantic until years later and
then married in 1981.
7. Sarah Ferguson Photo Scandal:
Sarah, Duchess of York, married Prince Andrew, Duke
of York, in 1986. In the early '90s there was a lot of
speculation about their marriage and the couple
announced their separation in March 1992. In August
1992, topless photos of Sarah sunbathing with American
financial manager John Bryan surfaced in which he
appeared to be sucking on her toes. Sarah and Prince
Andrew divorced in May 1996.
8. Edward VIII Abdication:
Back in December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the
throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American
woman who was still married to her second husband
when she became involved with King Edward VIII. When
he abdicated the throne, his younger brother Prince
Albert took over as king.
