Ambode opens Lagos City Marathon

The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi
Ambode, will early this morning open the
maiden edition of Lagos City Marathon, a
42km race sponsored by Access Bank.
Ambode will perform the function billed to
start 7am at the National Stadium in
Surulere.
About 20 elite athletes and over 20,000
runners are expected to feature in the event
which is the first in over 30 years in the
state. The event is aimed at making Lagos
State wear elite status like other top cities in
the world that has major marathon event
every year. Such cities include New York,
Berlin, London, Paris etc.
Chairman of the organising body, Deji
Tinubu, said the event would be a very
glamorous one since a number of artistes
are expected to be part of it. “We are ready
to stage a great show. The attention of the
whole world will be on Lagos on Saturday
morning. We are very excited about this,” he
said.
Elite athletes like Peter Kiplagat, Khalid
Lablea and some other from Kenya and
Ethiopia arrived Lagos during the week for
the event. The General Manager for the
marathon race, Yusuf Alli, said the event
would give lovers of marathon an
experience that would last for long. About
N92 million is the prize money for the
marathoners expected to run a distance of
42.195 kilometres.
